A Message from the President

Aloha Neighbors,

First, I hope you have noticed the progress on the Recreation Center, located adjacent to the park at the mauka corner of Anonui and Anoiki Streets.  Kunia Residential Partners (part of Castle and Cooke) is on track to complete construction and landscaping by the beginning of September.  Once the building is turned over to the community, we will move the office from above Times Supermarket to the Rec Center building.  We hope to make the Rec Center available to you for your special occasions shortly after the office is in place.  The Rec Center will have a large inside meeting/party area that can be divided into two spaces, a full indoor kitchen, and an outside lanai with a covered grill area.  We hope to have a reservation system in place so you can start reserving the Rec Center for your special occasions.

Second, in celebration of the opening of the Rec Center, we want to have a Royal Kunia Community Party with keiki activities, athletic competitions and some evening musical entertainment.  If we want this to happen in October, we need to start planning now.  That means we need you to volunteer the head up or help with one of the activities above.  We have a lot of talented people in this community, and I think you’ll enjoy helping your neighbors in putting on this event.  So, call or e-mail or General Manager Albi Mateo and let her know you want to help.  688-9001 or manager@rkca.org .

Third, many of you probably noticed that the “Proposed Golf Course” land has had some serious fire break work done.  After years of trying to get the owner to take the fire hazard seriously, they seem to have hired a good contractor to do the work.  We have the contact information for the contractor and have been informally talking to him to maintain cooperation for the benefit of all parties.  If you have any input, contact the office and we’ll pass it on.

Fourth, we all recently received our recycling bins from the City and County of Honolulu.  Pickup for recyclables and green waste begins in May.  We are going to have a challenge finding a place to store these bins when not on the curb on pick up days.  There will be a grace period until June 1st for homeowners to find an appropriate storage spot for these containers not visible from the street, such as inside the garage or behind fence gates.

Finally, some of you have been getting letters regarding covenant enforcement.  From reading all the discrepancies, it seems to me a lot of our neighbors don’t realize they are responsible for the planter strip in front of their house (See Design Committee Rules, Section 28.B. and 28.D.).  The planter strip is the piece of grass between the sidewalk and the street.  It isn’t part of the property you own, but the covenants are clear that you are responsible for making sure it is kept up (landscaped, watered, grass cut, weeds removed).  If there is a tree in your part of the planter strip, you don’t have to prune it, but you are responsible for sweeping up the opala it drops.  I see many good neighbors taking this responsibility seriously; please be one of them.

See you around the neighborhood!  Keep calling in problems with lights and sprinklers, being as specific as possible, so we can keep them working right.  The office number is 688-9001.  If no one is at the office, leave a message for routine things, or call the emergency number, 593-6800, given on the recording for things that need to be taken care of immediately, like sprinklers continuously on.  If you observe criminal activity such as vandalism, trespassing, or racing, call 911.

All the best,
Mike Freeman
